The second day of grief passed empty. Democritus' void, not trying to fill an empty day, and a piece without a single note.

Some days are empty not because nothing happened, but because something is missing.
Friday. An empty day.
I do not want to say I did nothing today, because that sentence always comes out of my mouth like an accusation. Today was an empty day. That is all.
Kenon
Kenon means void in Greek.
Democritus described the world with two things: atoms and the void. For atoms to be able to move, there had to be void between them. Without the void, nothing could stir from its place.
Aristotle opposed this in the Physics and argued that a void cannot exist. The debate went on for centuries.
Today I am on Democritus' side. The void is something too. For something to be able to move again, first there needs to be a little empty space.
Not filling an empty day
For someone with ADHD, an empty day can feel like a dangerous day. You scatter into a screen or into half-finished tasks, and when evening comes a kind of guilt comes with it: what did I do all day?
Three days ago, in the eleutheria entry, I wrote about the emptiness of a day when nobody interferes. That emptiness was a desk waiting to be filled. Today's emptiness is different. It is a space that opened because something left.
I did not try to fill it. Yesterday's page was heavy. I am letting today's page be light.
In September I wrote that I stopped fighting myself. Not punishing an empty day for being unproductive is what that decision looks like today.
A piece next to the concept
John Cage: 4′33″.
First performed by David Tudor in 1952. The pianist walks on stage, sits at the piano, and for four minutes and thirty-three seconds plays not a single note.
But the piece is not empty. The coughs in the hall, the creaking chairs, the wind outside become the piece itself. What we call silence is never really empty inside.
Today was like that too.
Toward tomorrow
Tomorrow is Saturday. I have not chosen tomorrow's word yet. I can go to sleep without choosing it.
